Waiheke Island is a short 35-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland, best known for its vineyards, outdoor activities and restaurants.

Depending on whom you talk to, Waiheke has a permanent resident population of between 8,000 and 9,000 people, but is a popular summer destination where the population can swell to as much as 50,000 people.

If visiting for the day, be aware that many shops and vineyards close early, so it is advisable to arrive before lunchtime.

Getting around the island is very easy, with many buses, taxis and tour options. When arriving by ferry, the buses tend to leave shortly after the ferry docks; if you are planning on catching them, it pays to make your way straight outside, rather than browsing the tourist information in the terminal.

The main built-up areas people visit tend to be Oneroa, Ostend and Onetangi. Oneroa is a short 15-minute walk from the Matiatia Ferry Terminal and boasts two beautiful sweeping beaches. The island is a lot larger than some people expect and while bike rental is a wonderful option, it may not be the most practical if planning to visit Onetangi or the far end of the island.
